What is this all about??? I've no idea - but I know a masterpiece when I hear it! This is a new level for Finnish music! Ironic that I can't understand a word of my favourite song on the 4 CD set! Well that's not strictly true - I can hear Santa Claus and Hare Krishna are in there. I knew Jore was working on something and he was waiting on Tuomas and his young daughter, Tinka, to do some singing. Well I love this. It made me smile, cry and laugh out loud. Vaudeville with balls. --Davy
This is about... finding an old Orvot melody ringing in your head and trying to find some lyrics to it; only to get together some old Finnish xmas songs, folk songs, poems from Kalevala book and Hare Krisna mantra. Now, what to do with them, how to clue them up together. And after many days hard thinking I made a story of a poor little shepherd girl long time ago, who got lost in the forest, start to cry and is found by the forest people, which bring her to their shaman (oh, I see a Donovan connection here...) who promise to show the way back home if the girl would sing to them. So the girl sings all those stuff I mentioned before and story will have a happy end. Tuomas agreed to sing the shaman part and his daughter Tinka is the shepherd. --Jore
Kauan sitten, paimenparka
metsään eksyi, tyttö arka,
tutki maat ja tutki mannut,
kotiin enää ei osannut
Metsään juoksi syvemmälle
viimein uupui mättähälle
Sieltä kuuli metsän kansa
huutoaan ja itkuansa
Saapuivat jo keijukaiset,
maahisetkin auttavaiset,
nimiltänsä Booh ja Dinza,
veivät luokse shamaaninsa.
"Iloks, kulta, itkus muunnan
näytän sulle kotiin suunnan
jos voit laulaa laulut uudet,
runot, mantrat, salaisuudet"
"Vaka vanha Väinämöinen
elelevi aikojansa
noilla Väinölän ahoilla,
Kalevalan kankahilla."
Runomitta Kalevalan
nostaa miehen mielialan,
mutisee ja vaipuu transsiin
äityy sitten villiin tanssiin
"Tää on oikein mahti juttu,
mutta minulle jo tuttu.
Omaat äänen suurenmoisen,
voitko laulaa vielä toisen?"
"Joulupukki, joulupukki,
valkoparta, vanha ukki,
eikö taakka paina selkää?
Käypä tänne, emme pelkää!"
"Hare Krishna Hare Krishna
Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama
Rama Rama Hare Hare!"
Kappas tuota tyttölasta,
mantran lauloi Intiasta!
Kyllä nää jo meille riittää,
metsän henget sua kiittää.
"Makeasti oravainen
makaa sammalvuoteessansa;
sinneppä ei Hallin hammas..."
juuri silloin löytyy lammas.
'Ruskie neitsyt, valgie neitsyt,
sano sinä, sano sinä'
kuuluu vielä metsätiellä
laulaa lammaspaimen siellä.
English translation:
Long ago, poor shepherd
was lost in the forest, shy girl.
She searched everywhere but
couldn't find back home anymore.
She ran deeper to the forest
until she collapsed to the ground.
The forest people heard her
crying and yelling there.
Then the elves came,
also helpful gnomes,
called Booh and Dinza
and they took her to their shaman.
shaman:
"I will turn your cry to joy, dear,
and show the way to your home,
if you could sing us new songs,
poems, mantras or secrets."
girl:
"Wainamoinen, ancient minstrel,
Passed his years in full contentment,
On the meadows of Wainola,
On the plains of Kalevala"
The Kalevala measure
lifts up man's state of mind,
he mumbles and sinks to a trance
and then he run into a wild dance.
(dancing)
shaman:
"Oh, this is so great story,
but I already knew that one.
You have a lovely voice...
could you please sing another one?"
girl:
"Santa Claus, Santa Claus,
white bearded old grandpa,
is your burden heavy?
Come here, we are not afraid of you"
"Hare Krishna Hare Krishna
Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama
Rama Rama Hare Hare!"
shaman:
"Look at that girl child!
She sang a mantra from India!
These are quite enough for us,
the forest spirits thank you."
girl:
"How sweet a little squirrel
sleeps in his moss bed,
the tooth of the dog never...."
Just then the sheep is found.
girl:
"Brown maiden, white maiden,
say you, say you..."
can still be heard on the forest road,
sheep shepherd is singing there.
