11. Church Bells
(Heikkilä-McGowan)

This was an old poem I wrote in 1977 - I suppose that means this really IS 'juvenilia'! I think Jore asked me to write a poem but the Muse was out to lunch - so I sent him this. He done a fine job on it. --Davy

CHURCH BELLS RING DOWN LOVERS LANE
DECEMBER'S GRIME IS ON THE WINDOW PANE
THE EMPTY STREETS ECHO THE SOUND
UNTIL IT''S LOST NEVER TO BE FOUND

THE FIRE BURNS, YOU'RE SAFE AND WARM
YOU SIT AND SEW AND LISTEN TO THE STORM
OLD GOLD BRINGS BACK MEMORIES OF THE WAR
FADED DREAMS WONDERING WHAT YOU KEEP THEM FOR

ONE LOCK OF HAIR IN A TORN BROWN ENVELOPE
ONE DOZEN LETTERS, EVERY LINE FILLED UP WITH HOPE
ONE PHOTOGRAPH FADED WITH THE YEARS
ONE LINE OF PRINT FADED WITH YOUR TEARS

CHURCH BELLS RING DOWN LOVERS LANE
DECEMBER'S GRIME IS ON THE WINDOW PANE
THE EMPTY STREETS ECHO THE SOUND
UNTIL IT'S LOST NEVER TO BE FOUND
