Why does your brand sae drap wi bluid,
Edward, Edward,
Why does your brand sae drap wi bluid,
And why sae sad gang yee O?"
"O I hae killed my hauk sae guid,
Mither, mither,

And I had nae mair but he O."

"Your hawks bluid was never sae reid,
Edward, Edward,
Your hawks bluid was never sae reid,
My dear son I tell thee O."
"O I hae killed my reid-roan steed,
Mither, mither,
O I hae killed my reid-roan steid,
That erst was sae fair and free O."

"Your steed was auld, and ye hae got mair,
Edward, Edward
"Your steed was auld, and ye hae got mair,

"And whatten penance will ye drie for that,

And whatten penance will ye drie for that?
My dear son, now tell me O."
"I'll set my feet in yonder boat,
Mither, mither,
I'll set my feet in yonder boat,
And I'll fare o'er the sea O."

"And what will ye dae wi your towirs and your ha,
Edward, Edward?
And what wil ye dae wi your towirs and your ha,

"I'll let them stand til they doun fa,
Mither, mither,

For here never mair maun I be O."

"And what will ye leave tae your bairns and your wife,

And what will ye leave tae your bairns and your wife,

"The world's room, let them beg through life,
Mither, mither,
The world's room, let them beg through life,
For them never mair will I see O."

"And what will ye leave tae your ain mither dear,
Edward, Edward?
And what will ye leave tae your ain mither dear?
My dear son, now tell me O."
"The curse of hell fae me sall ye bear,
Mither, mither
The curse of hell fae me sall ye bear,
Sic counsels ye gave to me O."

13. Edward, Edward
(McGowan-T. Percy) This is a very old Scottish ballad. My old English teacher recited this in class in 1971 and he made it sound so scary the hairs on the back of my neck stood up. I suppose that's why it's turned up here. --Davy Nice way to mix 'scottish folk tradition' to 'weird' . I think we in Finland have a very similar folk tale - if I understand this at all. --Jore
